Before The Lone Ranger, but long after their final Pirates of the Caribbean collaboration, director Gore Verbinski cast the eclectic actor as his titular reptilian lead in his animated western Rango. In an era where Pixar has consistently dominated animated films, Rango stands out as a stark contrast to the beloved studio. The film doesn’t shy away from some darker subject matter and isn't afraid of going to some truly weird places with its visuals. Additionally, the film isn't afraid of depicting its anthropomorphized characters as realistically as possible in their design, with some of the most highly detailed animal designs found in an animated movie. However, it's Depp’s performance as Rango and his hero's journey that truly bring the film together to hit its mark every step along the way.
